At least 24 people died when the bus fell into the gorge

(CNN Spanish) — At least 24 people were killed when a bus on the El Alto-Los Organos route plunged into a ravine. Peruvian territory of Piura, according to police officials quoted by the official Andina news agency.

The Land Transport Superintendent of People, Goods and Goods (SUDRAN), the national agency that oversees these services, expressed regret in a statement posted on its official Twitter account.

“The company deeply regrets the loss of precious human lives and as part of the ordered actions, we have initiated relevant verifications to pursue the activities within the framework of our powers,” the document details.

Sutran explained that the bus belongs to Q’orianka Tours Águila Dorada EIRL, which – according to the first investigation – has a vehicle technical inspection certificate and mandatory traffic accident insurance. The company has yet to rule on the truth.

According to Andina, the national police and local firefighters are still working to transfer an undetermined number of injured people to hospitals in Talara.

The Archbishop of Beura expressed his sorrow over the accident and offered his condolences to the families of the deceased.

This is not the first accident on the highway. In 2020, a bus covering the same route overturned, killing at least seven people and injuring over 20 others. Most of the dead were Ecuadoreans, fans of the Barcelona SC football club, who were returning from Lima after a game.
