CAN Seeks Establishment Of Ecclesiastical Courts In Nigeria
The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has requested for the immediate establishment of Ecclesiastical Courts in Nigeria.
CAN’s chairman in Kano state, Reverend Adeolu Adeyemo made the request at the House of Representatives Public Hearings on the Review of the 1999 Constitution (As amended) taking place in Kano.
Bauchi state chapter of the association also demanded the establishment of ecclesiastical courts in the constitution while insisting that the provision for Sharia Courts and Sharia Commission without a corresponding Ecclesiastical Courts and Commission to attend to the yearnings of Christian citizens has served as a great marginalization and discrimination against Christians.
Ecclesiastical court is a court where Christian Canon laws are applied and are an instrument of judicial administration in the same way as Islamic laws are an instrument of judicial administration in Sharia Courts.

The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Shuaibu Ibrahim has said that if the need arises, corps members could be mobilised for war since they were part of the national defence policy.

Nigeria Filled With Bitterness And Sadness, Says Obasanjo
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo says Nigeria is dripping with bitterness and sadness.
This, he argued, is contrary to what God destined the country to be. According to him, God has created Nigeria to be a land flowing with milk and honey. He spoke in Abeokuta, Ogun State, at the unveiling of a book authored by Femmy Carrena in his honour and titled “The Man, The General, The President”.
He said, “My prayer is that all of us particularly in this country and now is that we will have something to contribute to make this country to the making of what God has created it to be; a land flowing with milk and honey. “Right now, it is a land flowing with bitterness and sadness. That is not what God wants this country to be. “We must change the narrative. We must talk to ourselves in the civilized language.
We Can’t Give You A New Constitution, Senate Tells Nigerians
The Senate, on Thursday, ruled out the possibility of giving Nigerians a new constitution despite a mass campaign for it.
Different stakeholders and groups, including Afenifere, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, had called for a new constitution that will capture the agitations of many Nigerians, instead of amending the present 1999 constitution, which they said had outlived its usefulness. They said the current 1999 constitution can not sufficiently address the socio-economic challenges currently pummeling the nation.
But speaking at a national public hearing on the alteration to the provisions of the 1999 Constitution in Abuja, Deputy Senate President, Ovie Omo-Agege, said it would be unconstitutional to embark on any process to provide an entirely new law without prior alteration of Section 9 of the 1999 Constitution.
“Unfortunately, it does not make similar provision or provide mechanism for replacing or re-writing an entirely new Constitution. “To embark on any process without prior alteration of Section 9 of the Constitution to provide the mode through which an entirely new Constitution could be made, would amount to gross violation of our oath of allegiance to the Constitution. “In other words, it will take a new Constitutional amendment to be able to give Nigerians a most desired new Constitution. It would be unconstitutional to do otherwise.”
