The Presidency would have reacted differently if Pantami’s case were forgery like Adeosun – Garba Shehu

Garba Shehu, the Senior Special Assistant to Buhari on Media and Publicity

The Presidency has stated that the crime of alleged forgery of certificate involving the former Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun, is different from the extremist views of Isa Pantami, the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy.

Mallam Garba Shehu, the Senior Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on Media and Publicity, who spoke on Channels TV ‘Politics Today’ on Friday, said the response from the Presidency on Pantami’s issue would have been different if it were certificate forgery.

“In the second case which is that of Pantami, you are probing the thoughts, what is called ‘McCarthyism’; you search the inner recesses of the minds of individuals, bring out things they have said, or they are about to say, or you think they would say, and use that against them.

“If Pantami had forged a certificate before coming into office, the attitude (of the presidency) would have been different,” he added.

He described those who rejected Pantami’s apology as intolerant.

“Those people who stand in criticism of a man who has said he had wronged society, he has apologised and changed, and they are not willing to forgive him to move on, they are the ones who are the problem. They are the ones who are deeply intolerant,” Shehu said.

There has been pressure of President Buhari to sack Pantami over some of his past positions on terrorism.

Reacting to the development, the Presidency stood in support of Pantami, saying that the buzz was more about his current job than his extremist statement.

Pantami had previously praised terrorists like, Osama Bin Laden, who he had described as a better Muslim than himself. He spoke highly of terrorists network like Al Qeda.

The minister, following the revelation, however apologized for his extremist views, saying that he was young at the time.
