Osinbajo says proponents of Nigeria’s break-up won’t succeed
Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo on Tuesday said the those wishing Nigeria well were more than those wishing for the country’s breaks up, adding that chances are that God will hear the requests of those petitioning God for the country’s survival.
Osinbajo spoke at the palace of the Emir of Gombe, Alhaji Shehu Abubakar, during his official visit for the 27th edition of the Micro Small Medium Enterprise Clinic held in Gombe.
“This country will remain one. Those praying for Nigeria’s break up will not succeed because those praying against such are much in number,” Osinbajo said.
PDP caretaker panel reverses ex-gov Aliyu’s suspension
The North-Central Zonal Caretaker Committee overseeing the activities of the Peoples Democratic Party in Niger State has reversed the suspension of a former governor of the state, Babangida Aliyu, from the party.
The caretaker panel, in a statement by its Publicity Secretary, Suleiman Mohammed, Monday night, described the ex-governor’s suspension as fake news.
The PDP in Niger State had earlier on Monday, announced the suspension of Aliyu, who is also a member of the party’s Board of Trustees. He was accused of engaging in anti-party activities which allegedly led to cracks in the party since 2014 and invariably made the PDP lost both the presidential and governorship elections in the state in 2015.
Army: Recruitment of 50 million youths comment, an error, says Tinubu’s aide
Tunde Rahman, spokesman for All Progressives Congress chieftain, Bola Tinubu, has said the comment made by his principal that the Federal Government should recruit 50 million youths into the Nigerian Army was an error.
The PUNCH had earlier reported that Tinubu made the statement in Kano on Monday during a colloquium to celebrate his 69th birthday.
However, in a statement on Tuesday, Rahman said the former Lagos State governor “seeks the expansion of security personnel by 50,000 for the armed forces and not the 50 million that was mentioned in error”.
Tears as suspected Fulani herdsmen kill 22 in Ebonyi, Enugu, Umahi fumes
Suspected Fulani herdsmen on Monday invaded Obeagu community in the Ishielu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State and killed 16 persons who were between the ages of 18 and 56.
Our correspondent, who visited the scene of the incident, observed that about 10 motorcycles and a vehicle, whose owners were killed, were set ablaze.
One of the eyewitnesses, who escaped the onslaught, Ngozi Odoabuchi, described the incident as horrible.
$1.5bn for Port Harcourt refinery rehabilitation outrageous – Reps caucus
The minority caucus in the House of Representatives has rejected the $1.5bn approval for rehabilitation of the Port Harcourt refinery, describing the figure as ‘outrageous and heavily inflated’.
The caucus, therefore, demanded an immediate review of the cost. A statement issued on Tuesday by the Minority Leader of the House, Ndudi Elumelu, said the caucus reached the conclusion after a thorough evaluation of the proposal.
The statement was titled ‘Reps Minority Caucus Demands Review of $1.5bn for Port Harcourt Refinery Rehabilitation.’ The opposition lawmakers said a critical cost analysis of the project indicates ‘a huge scam and a ploy by unscrupulous elements to hide under the guise of rehabilitation of the refinery to siphon public funds’, adding that the project could be transparently executed at a far lesser amount.
Nobody can sack me from PDP, says Iwuanyanwu
Elder statesman, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, on Tuesday, said nobody can sack him from the Peoples Democratic Party.
Iwuanyanwu, who said that he is a life member of the Board of Trustees of the PDP, said he had committed his time working for the success of the party.
The elder statesman said his role assisted the PDP in being announced as the winner of the 2019 Imo State governorship election. Speaking when he received in audience the caretaker committee of the Imo state chapter of the Nigeria Union of Journalists in his office in Owerri, the party chieftain said he was made a life BOT member of the PDP because of his committed role in growing the party.
Catholic rejects imposition use of hijab on Kwara Christian schools
The Catholic Bishop of Ilorin Diocese, Most Rev. Paul Olawoore, has condemned the government’s use of force to take control of mission schools in Kwara State.
He said the diocese was not in agreement with the government over the use of hijab in mission schools.
The prelate, however, discouraged any form of violence. He said, “I don’t want any confrontation that will inflict pain or any kind of injury on anybody. Neither do I wish that anyone should lose his or her life on this issue.”
