In the early hours of Friday morning, gunmen abducted 300 schoolgirls at Government Girls Secondary School, Jangebe, in Talata-Mafara Local Government Area of Zamfara State.
The gunmen in military uniforms suspected to be one of the bandit groups operating in the North-West region of Nigeria invaded the school around 1am.
They stormed the school pretending to be security personnel with Hilux vehicles and motorcycles and forcefully kidnapped the girls.
A resident identified as Haliru Jangede said that local vigilantes had tried to repel the bandits but were however overpowered.
“The bandits were too many and they all seemed to be carrying heavy arms as we heard gunshots from all parts of the town and when the shots stopped, we heard that the students had been taken away,” Jangede said.
According to an undisclosed source who spoke to The Punch, the bandits operated in the school for several hours without any challenge from security agents.
“When they came into the school, we thought they were security personnel but to our utmost fear and dismay, they started putting the girls into Hilux vehicles and motorcycles then drove out of the school,” the undisclosed source told The Punch.
One of the parents in his reaction said (as seen on The Punch); “I nearly fainted when I heard about the abduction of the students including my daughter.”
The Zamfara State Police Command in a statement by its spokesperson, Mohammed Shehu, confirmed the incident.
“We are right now on our way going to the school where the incident happened.”
The Zamfara State Government in a statement through the Commissioner of Security and Home Affairs, Alhaji Abubakar Dauran, said the bandits invaded the school in their hundreds.
“I can confirm to you now that we have sadly received the report on the abduction of the students of GGSS Jangebe and right now, I am on my way to the school.
“At this moment, l cannot say how many students were taken away by the gunmen until l get there, but we have already mobilized security men and members of the vigilantè who are now in pursuit of the abductors,” the commissioner stated.
Few days ago, a different set of bandits abducted 27 schoolboys at the Government Science College Kagara, Niger State, killing one of the students who attempted to escape.
Few months ago bandits also abducted about 300 school boys in Kankara, Zamfara State.
