Former SGF Anyim, NASS members promised to join me in APC 2 weeks after my defection; but they backed out – Governor Umahi

Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi State

Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi State on Sunday revealed that he planned to defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) with Senator Anyim Pius Anyim, a former Secretary to the Government of the Federation.

He noted that the plan was for Anyim and other leaders to join him in the APC two weeks after his defection.

The governor who spoke while addressing APC stakeholders at a meeting held at the Bouquet Lodge of the old Government House in Abakaliki, stated that Anyim backed out of the plan because he went to see President Muhammadu Buhari without carrying him along.

Governor Umahi said that he consulted all the National Assembly members and elders in the state before he defected, adding that they gave him their support and promised to defect with him.

He however noted that the anger of the NASS members and Anyim was that he outsmarted them and joined the APC before them.

“They were planning to ambush me, but it is difficult to catch the air,” he said.

Speaking on reports that Senator Anyim had supported him with N5billion to prosecute his governorship election in 2015, Umahi said Anyim arranged N5billion loan for him, which he had to sell some of his properties to pay back.

“I was a deputy governor, somebody occupying the highest position from the South-East (referring to Anyim) went and arranged for N5bn loan for me to prosecute the presidential election for his government. I had to sell many of my property to pay back that money,” the governor said.
