Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi State has stated that he did not defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) because of 2023 presidency as being speculated.
He noted that the injustice of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) against the people of the South-East from 1999 till date was the reason for his defection.
Governor Nyesom Wike had in his reaction to the development alleged that Umahi defected to the APC because of his 2023 presidential ambition.
According to him, the South-East region had been supporting the PDP, yet the party has not deemed it fit to zone the presidency to the region, adding that there are credible and qualified people in the region that can rule Nigeria.
“Let me clear the air and state that I never sought the ticket of PDP presidency and I will not. Whoever said that I moved to APC because they refused to zone the ticket to me is being mischievous. Even if the PDP promises me, an individual, its presidential ticket, how can that work?
“Why am I moving to APC? Some people said I was promised this and that but I tell you, there was no such discussion.
“APC never promised me any position; they never promised South-east any position, there was no such discussion. However, I offer this movement as a protest to the injustice being done to the South-east by the PDP since 1999 till date.”
Governor Umahi noted that he did not dump the PDP out of selfish reasons, but rather because of the long denial and refusal of PDP to zone the presidency to the South-East, adding that the APC was working for the region more than the PDP.
“I have been a successful governor for two terms and a successful business man in business, where I also have a calling.
“I am not driven by selfish interests but because we need to protest against marginalisation. We have benefited more from the APC government. I didn’t start this protest today. I have no regrets. In life, you have to be courageous.
“The South-East has remained faithful to PDP, voted for its candidates yet had not been considered fairly in Nigerian polity. The APC is amenable working for the South-East zone than the PDP.”
He however urged the PDP to consider an Igbo Presidency for equity and fairness.
Meanwhile, Chika Nwoba, the Ebonyi State Publicity Secretary of the APC, has resigned his position.
Nwoba noted that he was leaving the APC because he cannot work with Governor Umahi. “I cannot work with Ebonyi State Governor, David Umahi,” he said.
He expressed gratitude to the APC for electing him in 2018 at age 27 to serve as the party’s spokesman.
