PDP rejects curfew extension
The Peoples Democratic Party on Monday said it had noted the alleged assumption of Presidential powers by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mr. Boss Mustapha who announced an additional two weeks for the partial lifting of the COVID-19 induced total lockdown imposed on Nigerians.
The PDP National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Kola Ologbondiyan, said this in a statement, in Abuja, on Monday. He said there was nowhere within the laws of Nigeria that the powers to broadcast presidential executive orders such as the declaration of curfews and restriction of movements vested in the Office of the SGF.
“Such powers are vested in the person and office of Mr. President and not exercisable by proxy, directly or indirectly,” the PDP spokesman said.
FG queries perm sec for buying uncompleted building N7bn
The Federal Government has queried the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Science and Technology, Dr Mohammed Bello, for allegedly buying what it described as “uncompleted carcass” building for the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development in the sum of N7bn.
Bello was said to have superintended over the transaction for the purchase when he was still the permanent secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.
The Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Dr Folasade Yemi-Esan, made the allegations in a leaked query she issued to the permanent secretary on May 11, 2020.
Chinese medical team concludes assignment, stranded in Nigeria
The Chinese medical team which arrived on April 8 has been unable to leave the country following the unavailability of commercial flights to Beijing, the capital of China.
The 15-man team, which include experts in infectious diseases, respiratory illness, intensive care, cardiology, neurology, general surgery, anesthesiology and a journalist, had come to the country on the invitation of the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation.
The Executive Director, CCECC, Mr Jacques Liao, told Punch in Abuja on Monday, that the team had been unable to leave the country because there were no commercial flights.
Tribunal dismisses Akpoti’s petition against Bello’s gov victory
The Kogi State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Abuja, on Monday, dismissed the case filed by the Social Democratic Party and its candidate in the last governorship election in the state, Natasha Akpoti, challenging the outcome of the November 16, 2029 election.
The petitioners had prayed for an order nullifying the victory of Governor Bello of the All Progressives Congress and order a rerun.
However, the three-man tribunal led by Justice Kashim Kaigama, in a unanimous judgment held that the petition failed woefully and awarded the cost of N100,000 to be paid by each of the two petitioners to each of the three respondents – the Independent National Electoral Commission, the APC and Bello.
COVID-19 not a joke, Buhari tells govs
President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday told state governors not to take the raging COVID-19 pandemic as a joke.
He asked them to step up enlightenment of their people on the seriousness of the infection by ensuring they stayed safe.
Lagos, Kano, Borno account for 52% COVID-19 deaths – FG
At the press conference, the Minister of State for Health, Dr Olorunnimbe Mamora, said Borno, Lagos and Kano states accounted for 52 per cent of COVID-19 deaths in the country.
Mamora also said 60 per cent of COVID-19 cases in the country were aged between 21 and 50 years.
On Monday, Mamora said the Federal Government had sent more test kits and laboratory consumables to Kano State. According to him, 660 tests are being conducted in the state daily.
