Coronavirus: FG to increase weekly testing by over 9,000

The Federal Government may be able to increase its weekly COVID-19 testing by 9,100 following its readiness to repurpose the tuberculosis GeneXpert machines already deployed in all the states and the Federal Capital Territory.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control in its ‘National Strategy to Scale Up Access to Coronavirus Disease Testing in Nigeria’ posted on its website noted that the objective of planning to repurpose the tuberculosis machines were to decentralise and speed up testing across the country and strengthen national surveillance for COVID-19.

PTF warns against self medication, says private hospitals not allowed to treat COVID-19 victims

Boss Mustapha, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) and Chairman of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19, has urged Nigerians to avoid self-medication, stating that treating symptoms should not be mistaken as treating the virus.

“We should always remember that the symptoms of COVID-19 mimics some illnesses we already know but treating the symptoms is not the same as treating the virus and for this reason, we strongly discourage self-medication.

“We shall continue to encourage all Nigerians that feel the symptoms to go for testing and if positive, go to the isolation centres for care by experts. We still discourage management of this infectious disease by private hospitals due to the risk of infection.”

FG pledges enforcement of interstate travel ban

The Minister of Interior, Mr Rauf Aregbesola, has also assured of an effective enforcement of the interstate travel ban in the coming weeks.

“There are challenges, it has not been as perfect and effective as we planned, but it would get better. In the next few weeks, we would see a lot of improvement in the effectiveness of movement control, restriction enforcement on our highways,” the Minister said.

FG gives FAAN, NAMA, others 45 days to relocate HQs to Abuja

The Federal Government has ordered all aviation agencies to relocate their headquarters to Abuja within 45 days.

In a letter dated May 4, 2020, with reference FMA/PMD/7061/T/4 and signed on behalf of Sirika by the Director, Human Resource Management, FMA, Muhammad Shehu, the minister reminded the agencies that the order was  given  by the President in 2012.

The letter read in part, ”I am directed to remind you of a Presidential directive issued in 2012 requesting all the agencies under the Ministry of Aviation to relocate their corporate headquarters to the Federal Capital Territory (Abuja) for efficient and effective coordination and enhanced service delivery and note that eight years after the directive, the agencies are yet to comply.”

Fleeing Boko Haram terrorists abandon 72 family members, says DHQ

The Defence Headquarters has said some fleeing Boko Haram and Islamic State West African Province terrorists abandoned 72 of their family members in the heat of military onslaughts in Ngala town in the Gamboru-Ngala Local Government Area of Borno State.

The DHQ’s Defence Media Operations, which stated this at a press conference on Friday in Abuja, noted that the insurgents’ family members, comprising 33 women and 39 children, were being profiled by the troops of Operation Lafiya Dole for further possible action.

Expulsion won’t stop pursuit of my mandate –Abubakar

A Peoples Democratic Party aspirant in the 2019 Kogi State Governorship election, Abubakar Ibrahim, on Thursday, described his “purported expulsion” by the party in his Icheke ward, as part of a plot to frustrate his quest to pursue his “stolen mandate.”

Ibrahim, the son of former Kogi State governor, Ibrahim Idris said those behind the plot were playing out a script meant to arm-twist him into withdrawing his legal challenge of the outcome of the 2019 PDP primary.
