Court Grants Kalu’s Co-convict Post-conviction Bail to Treat TB, Cancer

The Federal High Court, sitting in Lagos, thursday granted post-conviction bail to a former Director of Finance and Account at the Abia State Government House, Mr. Jones Udeogu, who was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment last December.

Udeogu was convicted of N7.1 billion fraud and jailed alongside his principal and former governor of Abia State, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, who bagged 12 years in prison.

Following an application by his lawyer, Chief Solo Akuma (SAN), yesterday, Justice Mohammed Liman granted N50 million post-conviction bail to Udeogu pending the determination of his appeal against the December 5, 2019 judgment of Justice Mohammed Idris, who sent him to prison.

Sowore: FG Planning to Arrest, Infect Me with COVID-19

The Publisher of Sahara Reporters and Convener of the #RevolutionNow Movement, Mr. Omoyele Sowore, has accused the federal government of planning to re-arrest and infect him with COVID-19.

In a post on his Facebook page, the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) in the 2019 election said his planned rearrest was due to a publication by Sahara Reporters that the Chief of Staff to President Muhammadu Buhari, Malam Abba Kyari had contracted coronavirus.

UBA Provides N5bn to Fight COVID-19 in Africa

The United Bank for Africa Plc (UBA) thursday announced a donation of over N5 billion ($14 million) through its UBA Foundation, to catalyse a comprehensive pan-African response to fight the COVID-19 global pandemic.

A statement by the bank explained that the donation would provide significant and much needed support to Nigeria and 19 other African countries, by supplying relief materials, critical care facilities and financial support to governments.

A breakdown of the support programme showed that N1 billion ($2.8 million) would be given to Lagos State Government; N500 million ($1.4 million) to the Federal Capital Territory(FCT), N1 billion ($2.8 million) to the remaining 35 states in Nigeria; and N1.5 billion ($4.2 million) to UBA’s presence in countries in Africa.

Anxiety in Zamfara as S’Court Rules on APC’s Application Friday

Anxiety has gripped members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Zamfara State as the Supreme Court friday rules on the APC’s application asking the apex court to set aside the consequential order that made the PDP the beneficiary of all elective positions in the 2019 general election in the state.

A five-man panel led by the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Ibrahim Muhammad, had on March 17 reserved judgment in the case till a date that will be communicated to that parties shortly after lawyers representing parties in the matter adopted their briefs of argument.

Lawan Urges FG to Provide Relief for Ordinary Nigerians

President of the Senate, Dr. Ahmad Lawan, Thursday warned that trouble looms ahead if the federal government fails to urgently provide special relief for ordinary Nigerians to cushion the effect of stay-at-home order in the wake of the COVID-19 epidemic.

Lawan, who gave the warning as a follow-up to Wednesday’s meeting between the leadership of the National Assembly and some ministers and heads of government agencies, emphasised that not making provisions ahead of time to address the basic needs of poor Nigerians may likely lead to more problems for the government, and less result in controlling the spread of the disease.

Wike Directs Closure of All Markets in Rivers

Rivers State Governor, Hon. Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, has confirmed the index positive case of coronavirus in the state, declaring that the state government has commenced contact tracing of all those she had contact with.

Wike also announced that all markets in the state are to remain closed from Saturday, March 28, 2020.
