Nigeria needs true federalism to move forward – Governor Okowa says

Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State

Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State has stated that only true federalism where all federating units are allowed to operate on the basis of equity, fairness and justice could move Nigeria forward.

The governor stated this while speaking in Asaba, the capital of Delta State, at the Southern and Middle Belt Forum which comprises of Afenifere, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Pan-Niger Delta Forum, and the Middle Belt Forum.

“We should remind the nation and the Federal Government that there is need for restructuring,” adding that the Constitution of the country was not given to the nation by Nigerians,” Governor Okowa said.

“The National Assembly had made attempt to amend it (the Constitution) but due to divergence of views, it has not been easy to amend it.

“Unfortunately, a whole lot of things are sacrificed on the altar of politics and political parties and this is a major problem in this country.”

Governor Okowas commended the group, saying that they are doing a good job in clamouring for the restructuring of the nation.

“I belief that you people are doing a good work.

“You need the support of all and on my part, the little I can do, I will do to support you to the best of my ability,” Okowa said.

Earlier before the governor spoke, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, the Leader of the apex Yoruba group, Afenifere, who represented Chief Edwin Clark, the leader of the Southern-Middle Belt Forum, had stated that they were in Asaba to support the South-South Governors Forum plan to establish a regional security network.

He also condoled the state over the recent killings of 10 persons in Uwheru area of the state.

Adebanjo noted that the country should be restructured with true federalism, saying that anyone who opposes the restructuring of the nation is an enemy of Nigeria.

Okowa had also noted that the state government was making necessary arrangement on how to assist the children and families of those killed by the herdsmen.
