ICPC finally arrests Obono-Obla, the former Chairman of Special Investigation Panel on Recovery of Public Property

Okoi Obono-Obla, the former Chairman of the Presidential Special Investigation Panel on Recovery of Public Property, has been arrested in Abuja by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).

Rasheedat Okoduwa, the spokesperson of the ICPC, confirmed his arrest on Friday.

Obono-Obla who was declared wanted following suspicions of fraud and abuse of office in October 2019 was arrested yesterday.

ICPC had invited him following allegations bordering on fraud and corruption against him while he was chairman of the Special Investigation Panel on Recovery of Public Property.

The anti—graft commission had invited him to present himself at the ICPC and clear his name. ICPC in a statement had noted that law enforcement agencies had been alerted to arrest him whenever he is seen. Adding that he must defend himself and clear his name on petitions accusing him of abuse of office, falsification of admission records, living above his income and collection of gratification from suspects under his investigation.

President Muhammadu Buhari had in August 2019 approved the suspension of Obono-Obla following the series of allegations against him and ordered him to submit himself to ICPC.

He had repeated noted that he was innocent of the alleged crime against him, but however refused to go to the ICPC to defend himself.

Obono-Obla also noted that the ICPC was persecuting him without evidence against him.
