The Nigerian Army has revealed that a corporal among troops fighting the Boko Haram terrorist in Borno State on Wednesday opened fire on his colleagues, killings four of them and injuring others and then shot himself dead.

This was revealed in a statement by Col. Sagir Musa, the spokesman of the Nigerian Army.

According to the Army, the corporal who went berserk was serving at the theatre command of the Operation Lafiya Dole, Camp 15, located at Malam Fatori, a border community in Borno State.

The incident happened in the early hours of 26 February, 2020.

The corporal “opened fire killing four of his colleagues before shooting himself”.

“Two of his colleagues were also injured during the incident and are currently in stable condition in our hospital in Maiduguri.

“Efforts are ongoing to contact the families of our gallant colleagues who paid the supreme price in the line of duty. May their gentle souls rest in peace.

“Meanwhile, the investigation into the case has since been instituted to determine the circumstances that led to the unfortunate incident.”

The unfortunate incident raises doubt whether soldiers fighting the deadly group receives proper psychological treatment after confronting the deadly group in the ravaged North-East region.
