The Supreme Court on Thursday nullified the election of David Lyon, the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), in the November 16, 2019 Bayelsa State Governorship Election.
The five-man Supreme Court panel led by Justice Mary Peter-Odili declared that the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Diri Duoye , be issued a fresh Certificate of Return and the Certificate of Return earlier issued to the APC candidate be withdrawn.
The apex court disqualified Biobarakuma Degi-Eremienyo, the running mate of Mr. Lyon. Consequently, the court in its ruling noted that his disqualification would also mean the nullification of the Lyon’s election since they both held a joint ticket in the poll.
The Supreme Court upheld the November 12, 2019 judgement of the Federal High Court in Abuja which had before the election disqualified the APC deputy governorship candidate over alleged forged certificates.
Justice Ejembi Ekwo who read the judgement declared the PDP candidate who came second in the election winner.
The sacking of the APC candidate came barely 24 hours to his inauguration into office as Governor of Bayelsa State. However, Mr. Duoye is expected to be inaugurated into office on Friday.
