Why El-Zakzaky was not released alongside Dasuki and Sowore – AGF Malami

Sheikh Ibraheem El-Zakzaky, the leader of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (Shiites).

Abubakar Malami (SAN), the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, has revealed why Sheikh Ibraheem El-Zakzaky, the leader of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (aka Shiites); and his wife, Zeenat; were not released alongside Sambo Dasuki and Omoyele Sowore.

Malami alleges that the Shiites leader and his wife were still being held in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) because they were being prosecuted by the Kaduna State Government.

The AGF reportedly stated this while speaking to BBC Hausa and the Hausa Service of the Voice of America.

“El-Zakzaky and his wife are being prosecuted by the Kaduna State government on charges of murder,” he was quoted to have said in a statement released by Dr. Umar Gwandu, his spokesman.

“The Federal Government does not interfere with the cases that are being prosecuted by a state government,” he added.

Speaking further, Malami alleged that Sowore, the convener of the #RevolutionNow protest; and Dasuki, an ex-National Security Adviser; were released by the Federal Government based on compassionate grounds.

AGF Malami denied reports that they were released due to domestic and international pressure, saying that; “the only reasons for the release of Omoyele Sowore and Sambo Dasuki revolved around our commitment to the rule of law, obedience to court orders and compassionate grounds.

“It is important to understand the fact that as far as the law is concerned and in relation to the Nigerian justice system, one has multiple options after a court has ruled on a matter.”
