2023: APC Governors plot Oshiomhole’s sack in an alleged bid to install Buhari’s successor

Report has it that All Progressives Congress (APC) state governors are plotting to take control of the ruling party ahead of 2023.

According to revelation by The Punch, APC governors were already plotting how to remove the National Chairman of the APC, Adams Oshiomhole, in an effort to install President Muhammadu Buhari’s successor in 2023.

The newspaper revealed that an undisclosed source in the APC National Working Committee said that most APC ambitious governors were behind the plot to remove Oshiomhole.

“Everything that is happening is all about 2023. We know that these things are being propelled by the desire of governors to secure their political future post-Buhari, don’t forget we are the ruling party and we are doing everything lawful to ensure it remains so beyond 2023.

“Outgoing governors want to pick those who will succeed them. They also want President Muhammadu Buhari’s successor to come from within their ranks and they hold the opinion that for this to happen, they need to control the party at all levels.

“Whether you like it or not, any group, which controls the party at whatever level, has leverage over others. They know Oshiomhole is strong-willed so they want someone who they have a hold on to fit into their plans. That is all that is happening nothing more.”

Ali Bukar, the Zamfara APC Chairman, had last week told Buhari to caution APC governors and other state chairmen who were plotting to unseat Oshiomhole over their 2023 ambition.

“Let me also express our recent worries regarding the activities of some of the governors who are undermining the efforts of the national chairman of our great party, Adams Oshiomhole, to reposition the party by plotting his removal,” Bukar said last week when Buhari meet with APC state chairmen.

“It is more worrisome knowing full well that they are not doing this because the national chairman is not performing his duties, according to the constitution, but they are fighting him due to their 2023 presidential ambitions when it is a notorious fact that Mr President had just commenced his second term in office a few months ago,” he added.

However, Inuwa Abdulkadir, the National Vice Chairman of the APC (North), in his response to the development said that the party cannot shut governors out because they are important stakeholders in APC.

“They are important stakeholders in any party. The stage we are democratically has shown how strategic governors are. Even as members of the National Assembly, you are elected from a state and the governor is the leader of the party at the state level. Party politics is about service and interests.  This is normal in a democracy,” he told Punch.
