Court orders DSS to release Sowore within 24hours and pay him N100,000

Omowole Sowore, the Presidential Candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) in the February 23, 2019 poll

Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu of the Federal High Court in Abuja has given the Department of State Services (DSS) a 24 hours ultimatum to release the convener of the #RevolutionNow protest, Mr. Omoyele Sowore, and his co-defendant, Olawale Bakare.

The judge gave the order earlier today at the commencement of Sowore and Bakare’s trial.

The court had granted them bail as they met all their bail conditions. But the DSS had vehemently refused to release them, giving so many excuses why they cannot be released. One of the excuses was that the sureties who stood for them must appear before the DSS.

Justice Ojukwu who expressed displeasure over the decision of the DSS to disobey her order noted that the secret service had no justifiable reason to hold the defendants in custody.

Instead of continuing with the trail, she adjourned it till Friday and blamed the prosecution for the adjournment because they refused to comply with her order issued on November 6.

Apart from the 24hours release order, Justice Ojukwu also awarded the cost of N100,000 (which must be paid before tomorrow’s hearing) against the DSS. The amount is to be paid to the defendants by the DSS for foisting frivolous adjournment on the court.

The DSS is yet to issue a statement regarding today’s outcome in court, and it does not look like the secret service is willing to comply as they took Sowore and Bakare back into custody after court session.

Nigerians are however watching to see what happens next.
