A three-man Court of Appeal panel led by Justice Abubakar Yahaya on Friday sacked Senator Dino Melaye, the lawmaker representing Kogi West Senatorial District.
The Appeal Court upheld the August 23, 2019, ruling of the tribunal and ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to nullify Melaye’s election and conduct fresh election within 90days.
Smart Adeyemi, the candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the election, had approached the court following his defeat at the polls on February 23.
The Appeal Court ruling on Friday was on the application filed by Melaye, PDP, and INEC challenging the ruling of the tribunal. The court however dismissed the 3 applications and ordered the electoral commission to conduct another election within 90days.
The decision to cancel Melaye’s election was due to the contradiction in the date the results of the election was declared and the date on the result sheets.
The senator who expressed no worries over the court decision said; “I just lost my election at the Appeal Court and Fresh election ordered. In all things I give God the Praise. He who started a good thing will definitely complete it. I ask my supporters to be law abiding as we shall always overcome. To God be the Glory.”
