Kano Emir is being persecuted for his unpopular opinions – Bishop Kukah

Mohammed Sanusi, the Emir of Kano

Bishop Matthew Kukah, the Catholic Bishop of the Sokoto Diocese, has said that the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, is been persecuted because of his unpopular opinions.

“The emir is here, he is still fighting for his life because of the position that he has taken and all of you sitting here know that it has literally become a matter to a particular course because the things he is saying are not popular,” the Bishop said at the 25th Nigerian Economic Summit.

Naija Buzz News had reported how Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State created four new emirates with new emirs in the state.

The creation of the 4 new emirates practically reduced the influence of the 800 year old Kano Emirate. Rumour has it that the decision of the governor to create more emirates was deliberate to reduce Sanusi’s influence because he refused to support his re-election bid.

Kukah further called on more investments in education. He said that; “the money that comes from the centre to our states, who is it meant for?

“When you say education is on the concurrent list, I worry that many of our states are providing opportunities for incubators of hatred to grow.

“If you take northern Nigeria where there is no single Christian or woman in the state assembly, women are lucky if they become commissioners for women’s affairs.”

The bishop further noted that because of his understanding about the importance of secondary school, he established 5, in which 60% of students are Muslims.

“I have five secondary schools and I have to rely on the little collection that I receive in my church to send children to school and in many of the schools, 60 per cent of the children are Muslims,” he noted.
