Senate must make sacrifice by having only one senator per state to reduce cost of governance – Okorocha

Ex-Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State

Senator Rochas Okorocha, the lawmaker representing Imo West Senatorial District, has proposed that Nigeria allow only one senator per state instead of three senators currently allowed per state.

“We must begin to make sacrifice and cut down our cost of governance by having just one Senatorial representative, instead of three (3) per state,” Okorocha said while speaking during Senate plenary on Thursday.

“We should fund the productive sector of our economy,” he added.

According to Okorocha, having one senator per state would greatly reduce the huge cost of governance in the country.

The Ex-Imo State Governor gave the recommendation while responding to Senate President Ahmad Lawan’s statement on the need to have an economy that creates jobs and wealth.

“We need diversification in various sectors of our economy like the agricultural sector, solid minerals and tourism. The mono-economy is not working for this country,” the senate president had stated earlier.
