President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday directed the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) not to give any food importer foreign exchange.
“Don’t give a cent to anybody to import food into the country,” Buhari said at his Daura country home in Katsina State when Governors of the All Progressives Congress (APC) paid him a Sallah visit.
According to the president, Nigeria has achieved full food security and could cater for itself without importation of food.
Buhari noted that the foreign currency would rather be preserved for the diversification of the economy.
The president noted that many states that embraced the federal government’s policy on agriculture were already making huge profits from rice farming.
“We have achieved food security, and for physical security we are not doing badly,” Buhari told the APC governors led by the chairman of the Nigerian Governors Forum, Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State.
Governor Fayemi in his own speech thanked President Buhari for his sense of justice, fairness and forthrightness. He added that states, although faced with enormous challenges, were already doing well to overcome.
The Chairman of the APC governors, Governor Alhaji Atiku Bagudu of Kebbi State, also commended Buhari for working closely with state governors.
“The country is more secure than in 2015, and the country is more prosperous than in 2015 because you are working for the majority of the people,” Governor Bagudu said.
Speaking about the forthcoming November governorship elections in Kogi and Bayelsa States, the APC governors chairman said that the party must work towards winning the elections.
