Four students of the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Bauchi have been confirmed dead and seven others injured following the collapse of a bridge due to flood.
Also, unidentified numbers of student were also missing following the gruesome accident. The students were apparently carried away by the flood.
The incident happened at the Gubi Campus of the University on Monday night when student who had gone to read were returning to their hostels. The victims were particularly on the bridge when it occurred.
Prof. Muhammed Abdulaziz, the Vice Chancellor of the institution, confirmed the death of the students and consequently announced the closure of the school on Tuesday.
“The students were trying to return to their hostels in the midst of the rain last night when the connecting bridge between their reading area and their hostels collapsed and the students drowned,” Prof. Abdulaziz told Naija Buzz News correspondent and other journalists who were present at the press briefing on Tuesday in Bauchi.
The other students who were injured are currently receiving treatment at ATBU medical centre, while safety and security agents are currently searching for those who are still missing
Our correspondent observed that the metal bridge linking the main school area to the student hostel area broke at the centre apparently due to weight of the students after the heavy flood had weakened the bridge. At the time when it occurred, the heavy rainfall had flooded the small river in which the 4 victims drowned.
