Following his arrest, the Inspector General of Police, Adamu Muhammad, said that Sowore was arrested for a treasonable crime. He noted that calling for a revolution is treason, alleging that it was a call to overthrow the government.

The Presidency also says that the protest was a plot to overthrow President Muhammadu Buhari.

Naija Buzz News big story on Monday provides more details on how President Buhari who now calls #RevolutionNow protests treason against his government, encouraged Nigerians in 2011 to emulate Egypt revolution against President Mubarak and organize a revolution against the government of Ex-President Goodluck Jonathan.

Despite his arrest however, people still came out in Lagos, Abuja, Ibadan, Cross River, Ogun, Ondo, Osun and other cities across the nation (especially in the south). Some protesters also went to the Nigerian High Commission in London demanding for the release of Mr. Sowore.

Protesters across the country were greeted with teargas by armed security operatives who assaulted them and forcefully arrested them. Among those arrested across Nigeria includes students, women and journalists who were at the scene of the protest to cover it.
