The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Monday obtained a court order to freeze a First City Monument Bank account operated by the Government of Bauchi State.
Justice Taiwo Taiwo of an Abuja Federal High Court issued the order to enable it investigate the immediate past governor of the state, Mr. Mohammed Abubakar.
Abubakar who is a chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is being investigated for an alleged N19.9billion money laundering.
The EFCC alleges that Mr. Abubakar had fraudulently initiated a process of laundering the huge sum.
According to the anti-graft says that the Ex-Governor was plotting to siphon the state’s funds through payments for non-executed contracts. Consequently, it filed for an ex parte application (FHC/ABJ/CS/858/2019) through its lawyer, Abubakar Aliyu, to compel the bank to freeze the state account with the name “Bauchi State Government Operational Account” and Account Number – 0998552074.
Hearing for the case is on September 3, and the EFCC is expected to provide report on its investigation on same day in court.
Ex-Governor Abubakar is the third APC chieftain who is currently under investigation after their tenure as governors.
The first was Ex-Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State whose schools were sealed by the anti-graft to enable it investigate him; the second was Ex-Governor Abdulaziz Yari of Zamfara State whose Talata Mafara’s residence was raided by the EFCC few days ago; and now Ex-Governor Abubakar.
