IGP says planned ‘#RevolutionNow’ protest is a treasonable offence; but Buhari called for a revolution in 2011

The Inspector General of Police, Mr. Mohammed Adamu

The Nigeria Police in its reaction to the arrest of Mr. Omowole Sowore, the Presidential Candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) ahead of the planned August 5, 2019 protest, says that the planned protest is a treasonable felony.

Naija Buzz News had reported the arrest of Mr. Sowore by the operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) ahead of the protest tagged ‘#RevolutionNow’ today.

Sowore was forcefully taken away by the secret operatives from his apartment in an ungodly hour of the night.

The Inspector General of Police, Adamu Muhammad, following his arrest and call for his release by Nigerians says that the planned ‘#RevolutionNow’ protest spearheaded by Sowore is a treasonable offence.

IGP Adamu further warned everyone to stay away from the protest which is supposed to hold today.

What is however shocking and perceived as hypocritical is that President Muhammadu Buhari who while aspiring for the Office of the President in 2011 called for revolution against the Ex-President Goodluck Jonathan-led Nigerian Government at the time, but however finds Sowore’s planned revolution protest as treasonable now.

Buhari had at the time commended the Egyptian security forces for refusing to attack protesters who demanded for change and consequently ended the rule of Hosni Mubarak.

“The Egyptian pro-democracy campaigners defied all odds to achieve their set goal of terminating the 30-year old grip on power by Mubarak. Their tenacity has again confirmed the truism that no force on earth can stop a people determined,” Buhari said through his then spokesman, Yinka Odumakin.

“The military in Egypt showed exemplary conduct with the way they refused to be used to attack the forces of change,” he added.

“The time has come for our own security forces to demonstrate similar valour by putting national interest above that of individuals when there is a clash between the two. It is time to demonstrate people’s power to free our country from those who have held it hostage for the last 12 years and are threatening to keep it so for 60 years,” Buhari noted while referring to the Nigerian Government led by the then ruling party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Buhari however sees today’s call for a change as treasonable, apparently because he is now the president.

He proscribes and declares terrorist organisation groups demanding for a genuine cause, but sits and negotiates with killers and other harmful groups.

His government had repeatedly released apprehended terrorists described as ‘repentant terrorist’, negotiate with armed Fulani bandits abducting and killing innocent people, but however declared the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and recently the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (Shiites), demanding for secession from Nigeria and the release of their leader, Sheikh Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, respectively, as terrorist groups.

Senator Shehu Sani, a former Chieftain of President Buhari’s party, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), in his reaction to Sowore’s arrest noted that; If the government can have coffee with bandits, it can also dialogue with dissents.”

He noted that the “Government is walking in the sun and it’s allergic to Shadows.Adding that; “they run away from the python and tag the millipede as python. They hide from the hawks, hovering over the skies, and hunt the Doves in the Garden. They become lambs when they Meet the Lions and become Tigers when they encounter the Gazelles.”

Now Sowore, the man spearheading the ‘RevolutionNow’ protest, which was schedule to start today is now held under custody for an alleged treasonable offence against a government now headed by a man who once called for a revolution in Nigeria.

Read the statement justifying Sowore’s arrest issued by the IGP below, (forgetting that his boss, President Buhari, had called for same revolution against the then government in power in 2011);

PLANNED ‘‘REVOLUTION’’ MARCH, A TREASONABLE FELONY – IGP WARNS

The attention of the Nigeria Police Force has been drawn to a video circulating on the social media by the ‘Global Coalition for Security and Democracy in Nigeria and others’, inciting Nigerians, home and abroad, to join a planned ‘revolution’ march against the Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria on Monday, 5th August, 2019 with the sole aim of forcing a regime change in the country.

The Force wishes to state unequivocally that the call amounts to treasonable felony and acts of terrorism and will therefore not stand idly-by and watch any individual or group in the society cause anarchy in the land.

While acknowledging the rights of Nigerians to embark on protest, the Force wishes to note that such rights should not translate to a violent and forceful change of government which clearly is the meaning of ‘revolution’.

Needless to state that Nigeria is a democratic republic and has well-defined processes for change of government, exercised periodically during various cycle of elections.

The Force therefore warns the organizers, sponsors, allies, supporters, associates and sympathisers of the group ‘Global Coalition for Security and Democracy in Nigeria’ to, in their own interest, steer clear of any such planned protest, demonstration, acts of incitement and proposed “revolution”, as the full wrath of the law will be brought to bear on any individual or group engaged or found participating in the above planned criminal act.

Parents and Guardians are therefore enjoined to impress on their children and wards not to allow themselves to be used in whatever form by any person or group of persons to cause breach of law and order in the country.

The Police will work with other Law Enforcement Agencies and positive minded Nigerians to protect, defend and secure our public peace and space.
