Police speaks on arresting innocent villagers over murder of Afenifere leader’s daughter

Following our report over the arrest of innocent villagers (mostly farmers) over the killing of Mrs. Funke Olakunrin, the daughter of Afenifere leader, Pa Reuben Fasoranti, the Nigeria Police has revealed that none of the arrested suspects in its custody had been linked to the killing.

Naija Buzz News had reported how a special squad deployed by the Inspector General of Police to work with the Ondo State Police Command were apprehending innocent villagers on the street over the death of Mrs. Funke who was reportedly killed by armed Fulani herdsmen.

The police in the state confirmed that some people were in its custody. But it however alleged that they were only invited for questioning.

According to the Ondo State Police Command, while searching for Mrs. Funke’s killers, the police picked up random people on the street for interrogation.

The police noted that the law permits it to invite any person for questioning in a case like the murder of Mrs. Funke.

It further apologised to anyone who had been harmed in the cause of its investigation.

Mr. Femi Joseph, the Ondo Police Spokesman, however denied reports that it arrested villagers. He noted that after investigations, any innocent persons who were arrested would be released.
