Mrs. Funke Olakunrin, the second daughter of Afenifere leader, Reuben Fasoranti, alleged killed by suspected Fulani herdsmen on 12 July, 2019

Mrs. Funke Olakunrin, the daughter of Reuben Fasoranti, who is the leader of the apex Yoruba Socio-Political group, Afenifere, was reportedly killed by suspected herdsmen on Friday morning.

Afenifere announced the death of the 58 year old woman in a statement issued by its spokesman, Yinka Odumakin.

According to the group, based on eyewitnesses, she was murdered by Fulani herdsmen who emerged from the bush and shot her dead when she was travelling in her vehicle from Akure, the capital of Ondo State, to Ore.

“Mrs Funke Olakunrin, based on accounts of all eyewitnesses, was killed by Fulani herdsmen who emerged from the bush, shot her and killed her in the process,” the statement issued by the apex Yoruba group read.

The Ondo State Police Command in its statement however said that the woman was killed by bandits.

Police spokesman, Femi Joseph, revealed that the gruesome incident happened along Ondo-Ore road between Kajola and Ore on Friday.

The police spokesman noted that it was hoodlums who attacked her vehicle with one other.

“It happened at a spot between Kajola and Ore, where some hoodlums numbering about 15, attacked two vehicles, 1 Toyota Land Cruiser and 1 Camry,” the police spokesman said.

“The the Land Cruiser was carrying five passengers, including the deceased, which we later identified as one Funke Olakunrin.

“They shot the woman, we rushed her to the hospital, but we lost her.

“Other four occupants that were abducted, we have rescued them.

“Inside the Camry too, we had three occupants, they were also abducted, but we have rescued them. We have rescued a total of seven persons taken during the attack.

“There is still one person left that we are still looking for, and we are working frantically to ensure that the hoodlums are brought to justice and ensure any other hostage were rescued,” he said.

Speaking further on whether the attackers were Fulani herdsmen as reported by Afenifere, Mr. Joseph said that their real identities are not yet known until they are apprehended. He added that crime does not have race, colour or ethnicity, saying that “crime is crime and a criminal is a criminal” irrespective of where the person comes from.

“No, you can’t shave the head of a man in his absence,” the police spokesman told journalists.

“You have to wait for us to arrest them. Somebody you have not arrested, it is difficult for you to establish his ethnicity,” he added.

The Afenifere socio-political group had vehemently rejected the establishment of the Federal Government proposed Ruga Fulani Settlement on any Yoruba land.

The group noted that the plan to establish Ruga across the nation confirms the revelation of former President Olusegun Obasanjo who accused Fulani herdsmen and Boko Haram of working to fulanise and Islamise Nigeria.

Until the real identities of Mrs. Funke’s killers are revealed, her alleged death by Fulani herdsmen remains a speculation.
