Buhari says he is under tremendous pressure to release his ministerial list

President Muhammadu Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has revealed that he is under pressure to release the list of his ministerial nominees.

“I’m under tremendous pressure on it (the ministerial list),” Buhari said on Thursday night during a dinner with the leadership of the National Assembly led by Senate President Ahmed Lawan.

The President however noted that his last cabinet consisted of people he did not know, but he had to accept them because the party and other individuals gave him the names.

President Buhari revelation has vindicated the statement of his wife, Mrs. Aisha Buhari, in 2016, when she revealed during an interview with BBC that her husband appointed people he did not know and ignored those who fought to get him elected into office.

This time around, Buhari said that things will be different. According to him, only those he knows personally will get into the list.

“Many at this dinner meeting are saying they want to see the list of the proposed cabinet so that they can go on leave peacefully.

“I’m very much aware about it; I’m under tremendous pressure on it. But the last cabinet which I headed, most of them, the majority of them I didn’t know them. I had to accept the names and recommendations from the party and other individuals.

“I worked with them for three and half years at least – meeting twice or two weeks in a month. So, I know them.

“But, this time round, I’m going to be quiet me – me in the sense that I will pick people I personally know.”

Buhari won his re-election bid in February and was sworn into office for second term on May 29. It’s been over 4 months since he won election and over 40 days since he became President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria for second term, yet his list is not ready.

Naija Buzz News had few days ago reported how the President of the Senate, Ahmed Lawan, during senate plenary told his colleagues that Buhari would send the ministerial list this week.

It is Friday already, and he (Buhari) is yet to send the list.

On Thursday he requested for the confirmation of 15 of his aides and the confirmation of the Acting Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Muhammad Tanko, as the substantive CJN.

When asked why the senate was yet to receive the list of ministerial nominee this week as he said, Lawan said; “Well, I came for a dinner and the process of receiving list is not at dinners. That is all I have to say about this.”

Speaking further, the Senate President denied saying that the list would be sent to the senate this week. According to him, what he said was that the ministerial list “could” be ready this week, noting that “could” is a conditional word.

“I never did. Let me take this opportunity to correct that. A senator raised a point of order under personal explanation and he said we should be sent the list of ministers by the executive arm of government.

“And in my response I said the executive is working so hard to ensure that the list of Nigerians that will help this administration work is going to be constituted, we could even receive it this week. Could is conditional and I will urge everybody here to report it as it is,” the senate president said.

In 2015, it took Buhari about 4 months before fixing his cabinet. The delay according to economic experts contributed to the economic recession witnessed by the nation in 2016.
