Senate setup panel to investigate crisis rocking the Edo House of Assembly

Inauguration of lawmakers loyal to Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State

The Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has constituted an ad hoc panel led by Senator Aliyu Sabi to investigate the crisis rocking the Edo State House of Assembly.

The lawmakers decided to setup the panel to investigate the crisis and find lasting solution following a point of order raised by Senator Opeyemi Bamidele.

Naija Buzz News had few weeks ago reported how 9 lawmakers in the Edo State Assembly elected its speaker and other principal officers in the absence of over 15 of their colleagues.

The 9 lawmakers according to our sources elected Mr. Frank Okiye of Esan North-East Constituency I as Speaker and Yekini Idiaye of Akoko Edo Constituency I as Deputy Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly around 9:30pm at night.

It is not the norm for a minority group to elect principal officers in the assembly. But these 9 lawmakers elected their leaders apparently with the backing of the Governor of the State, Godwin Obaseki.

The senator who raised the point of order noted that the intervention of the upper chamber was necessary to save the nation’s democracy.

Consequently, the senate constituted the panel with Chukwuka Utazi, Gabriel Suswam, Aisha Ahmed and Ahmed Kaita as members, and charged them to liaise with the lower chamber (House of Representatives) committee already investigating the crisis.
