President Muhammadu Buhari and Justice Tanko Muhammad, the acting Chief Justice of Nigeria

President Muhammadu Buhari has asked the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to confirm Acting Chief Justice Muhammad Tanko as the substantive Chief Justice of Nigeria following recommendation by the National Judicial Council (NJC).

Buhari’s request was contained in a letter which was read today at the senate plenary.

Naija Buzz News reported the controversial appointment of Justice Tanko following the illegal suspension of Chief Justice Walter Onnoghen on the order of the Danladi Umar led Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT).

Onnoghen who was accused of false asset declaration was also denied fair hearing at the CCT before his suspension was recommended to President Buhari.

We reported how the CCT further convicted Onnoghen and barred him from holding public office for 10 years. Before then, Naija Buzz News had already reported that the embattled Ex-CJN voluntary resignation amidst crisis.

Buhari, in January, appointed Justice Tanko who was the most senior judge following the suspension of Onnoghen.

Read President Buhari’s letter to the Senate (as obtained in parts by Naija Buzz News) seeking Justice Tanko’s confirmation;

“In accordance with Section 231 (1) of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended), which gives the president the power to appoint a Chief Justice of Nigeria on the recommendation of the National Judicial Council and subject to the confirmation of the appointment by the Senate. I have the honour to forward the nomination of Honourable Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammed for confirmation as Chief Justice of Nigeria.

“It is my hope that this request will receive the usual expeditious consideration of the distinguished Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
