Ruga Settlement: All Igbo, be ready to defend yourselves, enough of these undisguised Fulanisation policy – Chief Nwodo, Ohanaeze President

The President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chief John Nnia Nwodo

Chief Nnia Nwodo, the President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has called on the Igbo to get ready to defend themselves against any threat from the north.

Nwodo’s statement came as a reaction to the 30-day ultimatum given to the Federal Government by a northern group (The Coalition of Northern Group) to withdraw the suspension of the Ruga Fulani Settlement.

Naija Buzz News had reported how President Muhammadu Buhari suspended the Ruga Settlement project following vehement rejection from the south.

We reported how all the governors from the southern parts of the country, including some in the North-Central region rejected the Ruga project.

Afenifere, the apex Yoruba socio-political group, had condemned the FG plan, saying that no Fulani herdsmen settlement would be built on any Yoruba land. The group further noted that the project was a confirmation of former President Olusegun Obasanjo alarm that there was a plan to Fulanise and Islamise Nigeria.

Ohanaeze Ndigbo had also in a statement published on Naija Buzz News noted that no herdsmen settlement would be built on the South-East Igbo zone.

All the Governors in the South-East had also noted that there is no land for Ruga in the zone, but they were ready to enter a trade by barter agreement with the Fulani herders. According to the governors, they are ready to give grass to the herders in exchange for meat.

Notable heavyweights in the South-West including Prof. Wole Soyinka had condemned the Ruga idea, saying that it could cause Nigeria to explode.

Naija Buzz News also published how a Chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State, vowed that as long as he remains governor of the state, nobody would take their land to built anything.

So far before the suspension of the Ruga project, the presidency revealed that there are 12 states that have agreed to establish the project. All 12 states are in the north.

Meanwhile Naija Buzz News obtained a copy of Chief Nwodo’s statement. Read it below;

“My attention has been drawn to a broadcast by Abdul Azeez Suleman, speaking for a coalition of northern groups in which he had the audacity to give the Federal Government an ultimatum of 30 days to rescind its decision on the suspension of its RUGA settlements policy.

“Abdul went further to threaten the expulsion of southerners resident in the North at the expiration of his ultimatum if the Federal Government does not rescind its suspension decision.

“This irresponsible, unlawful and provocative outburst reminds me of the northern youths’ notice to quit the North to southerners two years ago.”

“The threat to evict law-abiding Nigerians from their places of abode in northern Nigeria is treasonable and obviously like the gun-trotting herdsmen will go unnoticed by our federally-controlled law enforcement agencies.

“Let Abdul, the Federal Government and others like them, take notice that Ohanaeze has no objections to all Igbo in the North returning home so long as all northerners in the South-East would leave the South-East and we dismantle the federal structure imposed on us by the military and return to autonomous federating units.

“The nepotism exhibited by this Federal Government, her duplicity of standards in law enforcement, her undisguised Fulanisation policy is repugnant to the rule of law and good governance. We will no longer tolerate any further threats from these northern war mongers.

“After all, who should be the aggrieved under the circumstance?  The millipede that has been marched is whimpering, but the person that marched it is complaining that his foot has been soiled.

“The southern Nigerian people that are bearing the yoke of oppression from cattle herders are trying their best to co-exist with their aggressors, yet it is the aggressors that are threatening further mayhem. This cannot be.

“I call on all Igbo to be ready to defend themselves. Enough of these threats!”
