Governor Ortom, South-East Governors condemn Presidency over alleged gazetted land across the federation

Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State has berated the presidency over its claim that the Federal Government has gazetted land in all the 36 states of the federation.

Naija Buzz News had published a statement issued by Mr. Garba Shehu, President Muhammadu Buhari’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, who noted that state governors especially from the southern parts of Nigeria were deliberately misleading the public on the proposed Ruga herdsmen settlement by the federal government.

However, Ortom, in a statement through his media aide, condemned Mr. Garba’s statement over the federal government having gazetted lands in all the state.

“It is true that government at the centre has gazetted lands in all states of the federation but because the idea is not to force this programme on anyone, the government has limited the take-off to the dozen states with valid requests,” Garba stated.

He consequently challenged the federal government to show any proof of the gazetted land in Benue State.

Read Governor Ortom’s statement through his aide below;

“We wish to make it clear that no land in Benue State has been gazetted for grazing routes, grazing reserves, cattle colonies and Ruga settlements, contrary to the Presidency’s claim.

“We expect the Federal Government to publicly tender documents of the claimed gazetted land in Benue State to put the matter to rest.

“The Federal Government should show titles to the land it claims to have in Benue State, the evidence of compensation it paid to owners of such land, as well as the purpose for which the land was acquired.

“The Benue State Government has already made known its stand on the Ruga settlements matter that the state will not be part of the project.

“This was why the government and people of the state rejected the attempt to impose the Ruga settlement projects on them without the consent and approval of the governor who controls and administers the land in the state in trust for the people.”

South-East Governors reacts;

Also, the South-East Governors Forum has condemned the claim by the Federal Government, saying that there is no gazetted land in the zone for Ruga Settlement, cattle colonies or any nomenclature the federal government desires to call it.

Naija Buzz News had on Monday published a report by the Governors in the South-East regarding the FG proposed Ruga settlement. The Igbo Governors had noted that there is no Igbo land that would be used for Ruga Fulani settlement, but they were ready to provide grass in exchange for herdsmen meat.

The South-East Governors Forum in its latest reaction to the Ruga settlement issue berated the presidency over the alleged gazetted land, saying that except if there is any other Igbo land known to the federal government, but Enugu, Anambra, Abia, Imo and Ebonyi States had not given any land for Ruga settlement to the Federal Government.

“There is no gazzetted land for Ruga in Ebonyi State or any other state in the South -East zone. There is no gazetted land for any establishment of cattle ranch or colony. There is no part of Ebonyi or Igbo land that is designated for such a purpose by the Federal Government,” the Governor of Ebonyi State, David Umahi, who is the Chairman of the South-East Governors Forum said through his aide, Emmanuel Uzo.
