Afenifere, the apex Yoruba socio-cultural group, has told Federal Government that the South-West had no land for Ruga settlement being built for Fulani herdsmen.
According to the group in a statement issued by its spokesman, Yinka Odumakin, the move to build the Ruga settlement for Fulani herders has confirmed former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s statement that there is a plan to Fulanise Nigeria.
Naija Buzz News had reported how Obasanjo in a statement alleged that there was a grand plan to Islamise and Fulanise Nigeria and West Africa.
Speaking further, Afenifere noted that it was not in support of the Ruga settlement because it is a ploy by the Fulani to colonise the country.
The Nigerian Government had developed the plan to end the clashes between farmers and herdsmen which had led to the death of thousands.
When asked if the plan by the government could end the clashes between farmers and herdsmen, the Afenifere spokesman said; “they can tell that to the marines; The Federal Government simply wants to carve out land from every community to give to the Fulani.
“When former President Obasanjo said there was a plan to ‘Fulanise’ Nigeria, they said it was not so, but what are you doing? For us in the South-West, no inch of Yorubaland would be given for Ruga because it is a plan to colonise the country. It is like what the British did.”
“Now that they are talking of local government autonomy, the plan is to turn the Ruga settlements to local governments for the Fulani in the future. So we reject the agenda, we don’t accept it.
“We are enlightened people; we can’t be deceived by such a ruse. They don’t care about the unity of this country and they are running Nigeria in a sectional way and pandering to clannish interests.”
Also, the Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, in its response, warned the federal government not to create unnecessary tension with its plan to establish it’s so called Ruga settlements for Fulani herdsmen across the nation.
“Ohanaeze is appealing to the Federal Government to allow peace to reign in Nigeria. Buhari should pursue the global best practices in his quest to plant his kinsmen in all parts of Nigeria,” Chief Nnia Nwodo, the President General of Ohanaeze, said.
According to him, the establishment of ranches in states that had land (which is certainly not the South-East) is the only option.
Naija Buzz News had reported the response issued to the Federal Government by the South-East Governors. The Igbo governors had vehemently rejected the Ruga settlement plan, saying that it would not surrender any part of its land for any Fulani settlement or whatever nomenclature it is called.
Nwodo further noted that the Ohanaeze is completely in support of the south-east governors position.
