No democracy, no electoral process is perfect – INEC Chairman says

Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu

Professor Mahmood Yakubu, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has said that “no democracy and no electoral process is perfect.”

The INEC Chairman stated this on Monday during a review of the 2019 general elections with Electoral Officers (EOs) from the North (including the FCT).

He told the EOs to tolerate criticisms, saying that it criticism is the basis for making any system work.

“Anything that anybody is going to say about the conduct of 2019 elections in Nigeria is secondary to the kind of information we are going to hear from those who truly conducted elections at the level that matters; at the level of the Polling Units,” he said.

“Where we should be criticised, I consistently say that friends will criticise you, but your enemies will condemn you. But criticism is the basis for making any system work,” he added.

The INEC boss while addressing the 387 EOs from all the northern states urged them to freely make their suggestions and contributions on any issue relating to the conduct of the general elections.

The review of the process of the general election would help the electoral umpire review its policies and programmes ahead of the 2023 general elections.
