How my predecessor wasted N2.3billion on burial in 5 months – Governor Mohammed reveals

Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State

Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State has made a shocking revelation on the activities of his predecessor, Ex-Governor Mohammed Abubakar.

Mohammed revealed that Abubakar between January and May 2019 spent N2.3billion to buy materials for burial in Bauchi State during his administration.

He made the shocking revelation to journalists in the state.

The governor who spoke through his aide, Dr. Ladan Salihu, alleged that N900million was spent on the purchase of white clothes purportedly used for wrapping corpses, while N1.4billion was used for woods to lace graveyards.

“This money which ought to have been appropriated by the state House of Assembly before expenditure, all of a sudden emanated from our treasury books. How could you imagine that a state government, within five months, that is, between January and May, 2019, spent well over N2.3bn on funeral materials, dresses for wrapping dead bodies and the woods that you lace the graveyards with,” the governor’s aide stated.

He further noted that there was documentary evidence to prove that the former governor robbed the commonwealth of the people of Bauchi State in daylight.

“All these are captured in the report of the transition committee and these were gathered from documents and vouchers and payments made from our treasury books. There is the Freedom of Information Law, use it and find out for yourself from those documents,” he said.

He also vowed that the Government of Bauchi State under Mr. Mohammed would ensure that all kobo is returned, saying that every instruments of the law would be used to recover all the stolen money.

“Government will take stern measures; we will recover every kobo that has been looted or stolen by the immediate past administration and, in fact, the administration before it. Where it is established that there is a clear case of misappropriation or outright stealing of public funds, it’s an obligation, you don’t allow criminality to run roughshod on the rest of us because these are public funds,” Dr. Ladan told Naija Buzz reporter and other newsmen in Bauchi.

The current governor, Mohammed, is a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He defeated the then incumbent governor, Abubakar, who is a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Naija Buzz News reported how Abubakar led about 20 lawmakers of the APC to the party’s national office in Abuja in protest on the recent development in the Bauchi State House of Assembly.

We reported how 11 lawmakers shut out 20 of their colleagues who are all APC members to elect a PDP Speaker in the House.
