Oshiomhole warns Bauchi Governor, says he is inviting trouble for himself

The National Chairman of APC, Adams Oshiomhole

Adams Oshiomhole, the National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), in his reaction to the development in Bauchi State, warned that Governor Bala Mohammed was inviting trouble for himself.

Oshiomhole told the governor to respect the sanctity of the State House of Assembly.

Few days ago, 11 members of the state assembly who are loyal to the governor elected the Speaker of the Bauchi State House of Assembly.

The Bauchi Assembly has 31 lawmakers. 20 were shutout of the election which was reportedly held secretly around 6am.

The development was similar to what happened in Edo State where 9 lawmakers who are loyal to the Governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki, elected the Speaker of the House in the absence of 15 of their colleagues.

Oshiomhole while speaking about what happened in Bauchi State noted that it was absurd for minority to shut out 20 members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in order to elect Alhaji Abubakar Suleiman, who is loyal to the governor of the state, as Speaker.

The 20 other aggrieved APC lawmakers in their reaction elected a factional speaker. They elected Kawuwa Damina, the Speaker of the Eight Assembly.

Speaking further, the APC National Chairman noted that there is no why the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) can produce the speaker of the house, the deputy speaker, and other principal officers when they are the minority.

According to Oshiomhole, if the APC had not misused its federal might to prevent Governor Mohammed from being inaugurated, it would be a shame for him to misuse his powers to undermine the rights and privileges of APC lawmakers in the state.

He further said that the APC would do the right thing by ensuring that the Nigeria Police provides cover for the parliament.

The police was clearly partisan the last time it involved itself in a similar case. In 2018, the Nigeria Police under the leadership of Ex-Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, provided cover at the Benue and Akwa Ibom States House of Assembly for APC lawmakers to overthrow following the defection of Governor Samuel Ortom from the APC to the PDP and Senator Godswill Akpabio from PDP to APC.

In Benue State, 8 APC lawmakers led by a suspend speaker, Terkimbi Ikyange, moved against 22 PDP lawmakers to impeach Governor Samuel Ortom under the cover of the police, according to Terver Akase, Ortom’s spokesman.

In Akwa Ibom, 5 APC lawmakers reportedly invaded the state assembly with thugs and armed policemen in an attempt to impeach the Speaker Onofiok Luke, and Governor Udom Emmanuel.

Oshiomhole also said that similar scenario played out in Edo. “Yours was 6am, Edo was 9.30 pm, all these are unholy hours. Those are nocturnal hours. The working hours for parliament are provided by the rules of the parliament.  It is not up to anyone to change those rules only properly constituted parliament can change the rules as they are,” he said.

The situation in Edo State is just a breakdown of god-fatherism. Oshiomhole is perceived as the god-father of Edo politics.

The relationship between Governor Obaseki and Oshiomhole however fell out, leading to what happened last week at the state assembly.
