How only 9 lawmakers out of 24, elected Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly

Inauguration of lawmakers loyal to Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State

In what appears to be a joke, nine (9) lawmakers in Edo State out of the 24 members-elect elected Mr. Frank Okiye of Esan North-East Constituency I as Speaker and Yekini Idiaye of Akoko Edo Constituency I as Deputy Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly.

The inauguration of the House and the election of the new Speaker were done by the Clerk of the House, Alhaji Audu Omogbai, around 9:30pm according to our source who chose to be undisclosed.

Apart from the two new principals of the House, the other 7 lawmakers who were present include; Nosa Okunbor, Henry Okuarobo, Uyi Ekhosuehi, Marcus Onobun, Ephraim Anehbosele, Roland Asoro and  Eric Okaka.

However, Crusoe Osagie, the Special Adviser to Governor Godwin Obaseki on Media, alleges that the new members of the house were inaugurated at 3pm and not at night as being insinuated.

Read the statement from the governor’s office below;

“The much-anticipated inauguration of the Edo State House of Assembly took place in Benin  around 3pm on Monday, June 17, 2019.

“The Clerk of the Edo House of Assembly, Alhaji Audu Omogbai, ushered the members-elect into the chamber and read out the letter of proclamation transmitted to the Office of the Clerk by the Governor of Edo State, Mr Godwin Obaseki.

“After reading the letter, the Clerk proclaimed the House and the members-elect began the process of electing the House leadership, with Frank Okiye of Esan North-East Constituency I emerging as  Speaker, while Yekini Idiaye of Akoko Edo Constituency I was elected as Deputy Speaker.

“Upon completion of the process of swearing-in,  Okiye took charge of proceedings.”
