Senate President Lawan swears in Okorocha as Senator

Ex-Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State

The President of the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Ahmed Lawan, earlier today swore in Ex-Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State, as the senator representing Imo West Senatorial District.

Okorocha was not sworn-in with his colleagues because of the controversies involving his emergence as winner of the election held in his senatorial district on February 23.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had seized his Certificate of Return because the Returning Officer for his district, Prof. Innocent, revealed that he declared Okorocha winner of the election under duress.

The former governor approached the court to seek legal action against the decision of INEC.

Naija Buzz reported last Friday that Justice Okon Abang of the Federal High Court in Abuja had declared INEC’s decision as lawlessness and consequently ordered the electoral commission to issue Okorocha a Certificate of Return.

INEC in obedience to the rule of law complied with the court order. The electoral commission however vowed to appeal the court ruling.
