The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Tuesday issued a Certificate of Return to former Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State.
INEC gave him his certificate of return few hours after the National Assembly election.
INEC had withheld his certificate following revelation by the Returning Officer, Innocent Ibeabuchi, who announced his victory that he did the announcement under duress.
Okorocha who apparently had plans for the recently conducted National Assembly election could not participate because he had no Return Certificate issued to him by INEC.
Naija Buzz reported few days ago that Justice Okon Abang of the Federal High Court in Abuja had ordered INEC to issue Okorocha a Certificate of Return because he was declared winner and the constitution does not recognise any declaration under duress.
Justice Abang noted that the decision of INEC to withhold Okorocha’s certificate was “lawlessness”.
After receiving his certificate, Okorocha commended the electoral body for obeying court order.
He said he was glad that the issuance of his certificate received national and international attention.
“With the release of his certificate of return as the Senator-elect for Imo West Senatorial District, former governor of Imo State, Owelle Rochas Okorocha, has thanked God,” his statement through his aide, Sam Onwuemedo, read.
“He also thanked Nigerians for their concern and solidarity all through the period his certificate of return was an issue.
“He also expressed gratitude to the judiciary for being there for those who hunger for justice.”
