The National Judicial Council (NJC) has reacted to President Muhammadu Buhari’s acceptance of former Chief Justice Walter Onnoghen’s resignation.
The NJC expressed satisfaction and gratitude over President Buhari’s acceptance of the ex-CJN voluntary retirement.
Naija Buzz had in April reported how the former CJN sent his resignation letter to President Buhari amidst some problems threatening his office.
The former CJN who was suspended from office by Buhari on the order of the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) was convicted and barred from hold public offices for 10 years by the CCT. The CCT had recommended his sack, but Buhari however picked the NJC recommendation of compulsory retirement.
2 Months after submitting his resignation letter (apparently as a safe landing option to avoid sack or dismissal from office), Naija Buzz earlier on Monday confirmed that Buhari had accepted his resignation which comes with huge retirement benefits in billions of naira.
The NJC noted that Buhari’s decision to accept Onnoghen’s retirement was the best option.
Soji Oye, the spokesperson for the NJC, noted that the council met today to deliberate on the acceptance of Onnoghen’s retirement by Buhari. It added that the president acted on the recommendation of the NJC.
He further revealed that the top judicial body thanked Buhari for his decision which according to it was in the best interest of Nigeria.
