President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday signed June 12 as Nigeria’s Democracy Day into Law.
June 12 Democracy Day replaces May 29 which was earlier recognized as the official Democracy Day since 1999.
Buhari had in 2018 declared June 12 as Democracy Day and National Holiday in honour of late Chief MKO Abiola, the acclaimed winner of the June 12 1993 presidential election.
About one year later, the president on Monday signed the Public Holidays Act Amendment Bill into law at the Presidential Villa.
The Act now makes every June 12 a public holiday and Democracy Day in Nigeria.
