The Special Anti-Robbery Squad under the Imo State Police Command has arrested one Nneka Donatus, a 27-year-old single mother, who sold her child for N600,000.
The police also arrested a level 12 civil servant identified as Ujunwa Udechukwu, who works at the Imo State Ministry of Women Affairs, for conspiring with Nneka to sell her baby to a couple.
According to report, the 40 year old civil servant conspired with one 37 year old Nneoma Onwusereaka, to commit the act.
Nneka who admitted to the crime while speaking to journalists at the State Police Headquarters said she used N15,000 out of the N600,000 she earned from selling her baby girl to buy phone, slippers and wrapper for herself. She also added that she had plans to use the remaining part of the money to start a business.
Nneka revealed that with five (5) children already, she was not ready to keep another child, which was why she sold her baby.
The 40-year-old civil servant who was also arrested for conspiring to commit the crime confessed that she received N10,000 for connecting the couple with Nneka.
Report has it that the police got to know about the matter when the mother of Nneka reported to police operatives that she did not return home with her child after putting to birth.
Rabiu Ladodo, the Imo State Commissioner of Police, in his statement noted that the command was working hard to end child trafficking.
