About 70% of killings and 79.8% of kidnappings since January 2019 happened in the north – Police IG Mohammed reveals

Mr. Adamu Mohammed, the acting Inspector General of Police, has revealed that 1,071 persons were killed, and 685 others kidnapped in the first quarter of 2019.

The IG made this revelation during the Northern Traditional Rulers Council meeting held on Tuesday at the Arewa House in Kaduna State.

He further revealed that 767 out of the people killed were from the north, particularly from the North-West.

According to him, 436 were killed in the North-West, 250 in the North-Central, while 130 are from the South-South region.

In the North-West, 203 were killed in Zamfara State, 112 killed in Kaduna State. In North-Central, 90 were killed in Benue State.

Mohammed said that 79.8% of kidnapping in Nigeria in the first quarter were in the North, with North-West recording 365 (out of the number, 281 happened in Zamfara State) out of the total 685 in the nation.

“This is followed by the North-Central geopolitical zone where 145 persons were kidnapped.

“It is pertinent to mention that Zamfara State has the highest national kidnap rate with 281 victims in what has been directly linked to the activities of bandits in the state.

“This is followed by Kogi and Niger states where 65 and 51 persons, respectively were kidnapped within the period,” the IG added.

Regarding armed robbery, the north also recorded the highest number (130 robbery cases out of the 212 robbery cases recorded in the nation).

“The North-Central geopolitical zone with a total of 81 armed robbery cases represents the zone with the highest rate while Niger State, the FCT and Zamfara State with 32, 23 and 18 cases, respectively occupy the three topmost states in the national armed robbery profile,” he said.
