The National Judicial Council (NJC) has removed the name of convicted Chief Justice Walter Onnoghen from the NJC’s members list.
Onnoghen was on Thursday convicted by the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) over his failure to declare some of his assets as required by law for Public Officers.
Justice Tanko Muhammad, the acting CJN, who was appointed after Onnoghen’s earlier suspension by President Muhammadu Buhari, was also given a 3 months tenure extension on Saturday.
Muhammad on the website was also recognized as the Acting Chairman of the NJC.
Naija Buzz observed that Onnoghen’s name and picture was removed from the current council members list on the NJC website.
His name was however added to the list of former Chief Justice of Nigeria who served from 2016 – 2019.
Following Onnoghen’s removal, the next most senior Justice of the Supreme Court would emerge as a member of the council and the Deputy Chairman of the NJC.
These developments have also empowered Justice Muhammad as the CJN, Chairman of the NJC, and the head of the Federal Judicial Service Commission.
