Report has it that senator Ali Ndume has vehemently rejected latest attempts by the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, to pacify him to drop his ambition for Senate Presidency.
According to Punch, leadership of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and some influential APC senators had decided to beg Ndume to obey the position of his party and support Senator Ahmad Lawan for the position.
The senator however rejected the move and insisted that he would contest the position against Lawan.
Tinubu had few weeks ago warned that any member of the APC no matter whom the person was must obey the party’s decision to make Senator Lawan the next senate president or leave the party.
NaijaBuzz.News had few days ago published a report revealing how Tinubu and the National Chairman of the APC, Adams Oshiomhole, were advised to lobby opposition Peoples Democratic Party senators to support Lawan.
An undisclosed senator of the ruling party also allegedly revealed to Punch that on Friday, some senators who supports Lawan’s ambition travelled to Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, to meet with Governor Kashim Shettima who is also a senator-elect under APC over Ndume’s ambition.
They were however reportedly disappointed when they could not meet with the governor who allegedly travelled to Saudi Arabia before their arrival.
“The governor, who was probably aware of the Pro-Lawan senators’ visit, travelled out of the country before their arrival.
“The lawmakers decided to meet the deputy governor, who is not a stakeholder in the project. During the brief session, the deputy governor told the lawmakers that Shettima had travelled to Saudi Arabia,” the undisclosed source said.
Ndume is from Borno State and he reportedly enjoys the support of his governor who would also be a senator in the 9th Assembly.
However, Sabi Abdullahi, the spokesman for the pro-Lawan group, described the report that they had visited Maiduguri to convince Shettima on the need to agree with the party’s position as flase.
Although he admitted that 13 senators including Lawan himself were in Maiduguri over the weekend, but it was for the wedding of Senator Lawan’s niece.
“Anybody telling you such fake story is a liar. Our mission to Maiduguri was not to meet Governor Shettima. We actually went there for the wedding of someone who is like Senator Lawan’s daughter, his little niece.
“We also seized the opportunity to condole with the family of the young lady who lost her father. The deputy governor was with us throughout the visit up to the airport when he returned when we boarded our aircraft,” he said.
Meanwhile, three senators-elect from Niger State have declared their support for Senator Lawan to emerge as the senate president of the 9th Assembly.
Mohammed Sani Musa, Sabi Abdullahi, and Muhammad Enagi, who represents Niger East, Niger North and Niger South respectively unanimously endorsed Lawan.
“We have resolved absolutely to give our support to Lawan who has the competence, charisma and integrity to preside over the affairs of the Senate,” the senators-elect said in a joint statement.
